At the beginning of a season, you can adjust your roster by trading and releasing players and signing free agents. The franchise mode returns in 2003, and while it's not quite as in-depth as the one featured in Sega's console game NBA 2K3, you still get to perform all the basic functions of an NBA general manager. Live 2003 still offers many of the same modes found in previous games in the series.

In addition, the PC version unquestionably has the best online features of any of the game's versions, since it lets you create clubs and track various stats online. The result is an incredibly fun, albeit unrealistic, game of basketball that anyone can pick up and immediately start to enjoy. Fortunately, EA Sports has almost completely reworked the NBA Live series for 2003 by quickening the pace of the game, adding a new "freestyle" control system, and generally making NBA Live 2003 play more like the classic 16-bit console games that helped start the series. In the 2003 Finals, the Spurs beat the Nets.It was probably for the best that NBA Live 2002 was never released on the PC, because the gameplay mechanics in last year's game were in serious need of fine-tuning. All three are tough to beat in Live 2003 along with the Mavericks, Spurs, and Celtics. This came out after the Lakers edged the Kings in a controversial Western Conference Finals on their way to sweeping the Nets for their third straight title. The jumpshot animation is a tiny bit stiff, and it can be tricky to identify the optimal release point. Issues with out of bounds are kind of a tradition for NBA Live games. While it’s silly fun that blocked shots are emphatically swatted across the court, the offensive team always runs after it and ends up out of bounds. When a defender gets in your path, you stop on a dime instead of absorbing the contact, which looks mechanical. Dribble moves are so fast they’re hard to distinguish one from the other. You miss out on some of the simple beauties of basketball. On the other hand, the spin move (up on the thumbstick or the triangle button) seems overpowered. I usually just used it to “escape dribble” into open space. I didn’t find myself crafting clever offensive moves. Unfortunately, I don’t think the right thumbstick dribbling control achieves quite what it means to.

And cheesy offensive strategies, like running up and launching a quick 3, don’t usually work. When there’s a few seconds left in a quarter, your defenders will automatically press to stop a last-second shot. A simple set of “quick plays,” like a pick-and-roll and post-up, can enhance your offensive game. There’s a few elements that add a bit of depth. The game doesn’t take itself too seriously. Alley oops are done with a simple press of the R2 button. There are some fun over-the-top animations, like 360 dunks and fancy layups. The shot clock almost never comes into play. The CPU is consistently aggressive, which I really appreciate. If you turn off the silly replays, there’s never more than a few seconds from one play to the next. I love how fast and furious the game moves, not just during the flow of the game, but after whistles. You are rewarded for taking open shots, driving to the hoop, and playing to your players’ strengths. It’s also unrealistically high-scoring, but it’s not like every shot goes in. There are plenty of controls, including the introduction of freeform dribble moves using the right thumbstick, but it’s intuitive and easy to pick up. Praises and gripesīoy, this game is fast. After the sim-focused 20 games received average reviews and the 2K series was starting to win the battle for basketball supremacy, EA tried something different, drastically speeding their gameplay up for 2003. This delightful game harks back to the fast pace and high scoring of the mid-90’s NBA Live games while incorporating a more modern set of controls and nice graphics.
